Our Programs

Garga Foundation has a diverse portfolio of programs aimed at empowering individuals and especially rural communities in Nigeria to promote civil society, democracy, social and economic development.  Our approach focuses focus on sustainability, community participation and ownership. We also ensure that programs are designed to respond to community demands and critical social gaps. Our programs designed to achieve our organizations set strategic objective as follows:

Strategic objective 1:
To support individuals in rural communities implement projects that will promote good health and agricultural development

Result 1.1: Promoting Good Health
Our Beneficiaries: Public and private schools, community based organizations, community leaders, Young Women, Children under 5, Aged Women, People infected or affected by preventable diseases.

Probably the largest burden and out-of-pocket expenses by the above target group goes to health. This is as a result of high poverty, lack of health insurance and poor health infrastructures.
Recognizing that health promotion is all about preventing illness, and preventing any existing illness from becoming worse. Our organization works hard to promote healthy living and lifestyles in especially rural communities through;

  • Promoting quality nutrition education for especially pregnant women and for benefit of under 5 children
  • Support proper nutrition for people living with and affected by chronic diseases
  • Helping caregiver to better provide home based care for people chronically ill with preventable diseases
  • Promotion of “no smoking” ,  “no illicit drug” and “no drug abuse”
  • Work on reducing nutrition deficiencies among children and young adolescents
  • Promoting eating healthy, natural  and balanced foods among all individuals

 

Result 1.2: Promoting Agriculture Development
Our Beneficiaries: Small scale farmers, Women Farmers, Rural Youth/Young Farmers, Unemployed men,

Releasing the challenges faced by the society and local small holder farmers in practicing sustainable agriculture and ensuring food security. Our organizations hopes to assist these individuals with information on agricultural best practices, farming techniques, provide vocational training, sustainable methods of agriculture, use of renewable natural resources, crop production, extension services, community agricultural development projects, environmental control; erosion & desertification

We help these groups

  • To improve their agricultural production and income generation
  • Develop self-help associations and profit making agricultural enterprises and multi-purpose cooperative
  • Develop linkages to capital and access to micro-credit and finance services

Strategic objective 2:
To assist orphans and vulnerable children to obtain quality education and vocational skills

Through this objective we hope provide several dimensions of support towards improving the lives of orphans, vulnerable children and their caregivers, while encouraging the building of community-based competencies to sustain their care. We are focused on strengthening communities through their cultural and religious structures  and creating supportive environments  to meet the needs of these children

We provide the following internationally acceptable continuum of care such as: health care, food and nutrition, education, shelter, child protection and legal aid, psychosocial support, and economic strengthening.

We also support institutional care of these children through to a family-setting. We  provide their new families with household necessities and capacity building and education to provided required services to the children.

We deliberately make attempt to identify child headed household and support the older orphans
At least three services will be provided to each OVC  in line with the minimum care package for OVC in Nigeria as outline in the Nigeria OVC National Action Plan 2005 – 2010 as follows

Result 2.1: Support OVC under 5,

  1. Education:  (OVC 2 - 5 years old); Holistic scholarship will be provided to pre-primary (2 - 5 years olds) this will include; Registration; Fees, Books, Uniforms (includes school bags and sandals), Exam fees, school meals
  2. Health:  Basic education and skills for health maintenance for caregivers of OVC and the OVC

              De-worming
              Referral for treatment of malaria
              Referral for treatment of TB
              Provision or referral for ARV treatment and cotrim to HIV - infected
              Provision of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITN)
              Reproduction Health and HIV prevention information and care services
              Referral for treatment of Opportunistic infections
              Payment user fees for OVC

  1. Clothing:

Provide at least 2 pairs of clothes to each OVC annually
Provide leather sandals at least 1 pair
Provide blankets and beddings

  1. Shelter

Provide accommodation for OVC on the street
 

 

Result 2.1: Support OVC under 5,

  1. Education: (OVC < 2 Years); schorlarship will be paid for especially abandoned kids (0 – less than 2 years) to help them receive day care services. This will include; registration, fees, play and learn materials, school means and clothes
  2. Health: Breast Milk Substitute for 0 - 1 years OVC

              Water to 0 - 5 years old OVC
              Vitamin A, Zinc and iron for under 5 children
              De-worming
              Referral for treatment of malaria
              Referral for treatment of TB
              Provision or referral for ARV treatment and cotrim to HIV - infected
             Provision of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITN)
              Reproduction Health and HIV prevention information and care services
              Referral for treatment of Opportunistic infections
              Payment user fees for OVC

  1. Clothing

Provide at least 2 pairs of clothes to each OVC annually
Provide leather sandals at least 1 pair
Provide blankets and beddings

  1. Shelter

Provide accommodation for OVC on the street

Result 2.2: Support to OVC 6 – 18 years,
2.2.1.1 OVC 6 – 12 years

  1. Education: Holistic scholarship for primary age OVC (6 – 12 years) which will include Levies, books, uniforms (includes school bags and sandals), exam fees, registration, school meal
  2. Health:

Referral for treatment of malaria
Referral for treatment of TB
Provision or referral for ARV treatment and cotrim to HIV - infected children
Provision of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITN)
Reproduction Health and HIV prevention information and care services
Referral for treatment of Opportunistic infections
Payment user fees for OVC

  1. Clothing

Provide at least 2 pairs of clothes to each OVC annually
Provide leather sandals at least 1 pair
Provide blankets and beddings

  1. Shelter

Provide accommodation for OVC on the street
Support households with OVC to undertake nutrition gardening - packages to include leguminous seeds, 2 goats, cattle, maize seeds depending on location and type of farming predominant in location of household

 

2.2.1.2 OVC 13 – 18 years

  1. Education: Holistic scholarship for secondary age OVC (13 – 18 years) This will include levies/fees, books, uniforms (includes school bags and sandals), exam fees, school meals, transports
  2. Health:

Referral for treatment of malaria
Referral for treatment of TB
Provision or referral for ARV treatment and cotrim to HIV - infected children
Provision of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITN)
Reproduction Health and HIV prevention information and care services
Referral for treatment of Opportunistic infections
Payment  user fees for OVC

  1. Clothing

Provide at least 2 pairs of clothes to each OVC annually
Provide leather sandals at least 1 pair
Provide blankets and beddings

  1. Shelter

Provide accommodation for OVC on the street
Support households with OVC to undertake nutrition gardening - packages to include leguminous seeds, 2 goats, cattle, maize seeds depending on location and type of farming predominant in location of household

2.2.1.2 OVC 17 – 18 years
  1. Education: Vocational training for older OVC (17 – 18 years) Community level; This will include payment for  required charges/expenses for the vocational training and/or apprenticeship and provision of  OVC with necessary allowances training grant and start up grant per OVC who complete training
  2. Health:

Referral for treatment of malaria
Referral for treatment of TB
Provision or referral for ARV treatment and cotrim to HIV - infected children
Provision of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITN)
Reproduction Health and HIV prevention information and care services
Referral for treatment of Opportunistic infections
Payment user fees for OVC

  1. Clothing

Provide at least 2 pairs of clothes to each OVC annually
Provide leather sandals at least 1 pair
Provide blankets and beddings

  1. Shelter

Provide accommodation for OVC on the street

            Provide business grants to secondary school OVC and OVC caregivers at household
            level

Result 2.3: Support to Women Caregivers

  1. Economic Support

            Provide business grants to start a self help business

  • Agricultural; growing vegetables, gardening, goat breading, sheep fattening or cattle rearing, processing agricultural produce such as groundnut oil, selling roasted corn etc…
  • Non-Agricultural business; such as sewing machine, grinding machine, baking etc…

Provide skills acquisition trainings

  • Learn how to keep business records
  • Learn crafts such as how to make pottery, tie and dye clothing, cheese, yoghurt making, etc…

Result 2.4: Support to Single Mothers

  1.  Economic Support

            Provide business grants to start a self help business

  • Agricultural; growing vegetables, gardening, goat breading, sheep fattening or cattle rearing, processing agricultural produce such as groundnut oil, selling roasted corn etc…
  • Non-Agricultural business; such as sewing machine, grinding machine, baking etc…

Provide skills acquisition trainings

  • Learn how to keep business records
  • Learn crafts such as how to make pottery, tie and dye clothing, cheese, yoghurt making, etc…

Nevertheless, Child Protection services and once in a while Psychosocial Support services may be provided to OVC on case by case basis as might be needed.

Strategic objective 3:
To mitigate the impact of communicable, non-communicable and neglected diseases in the society

Result 3.1: Mitigating the impact of AIDS, TB and Malaria
Even though AIDS, TB and Malaria are preventable but the challenge and impact of these diseases is still enormous in the society. We at Garga Foundation are working hard to help individuals that are infected or affected by these diseases or have lost a bread winner due to these diseases, especially AIDS and TB. For families that have loved one bedridden by Malaria (especially cerebral Malaria), we will support these families to live decent and respectable lives. We will support the children and women in the areas of food, health and/or shelter support.

Result 3.2: Mitigating the Impact of Non-communicable Diseases
Our focus on non-communicable diseases is to help individuals with diabetes or hypertension. Payment of hospital user fees and support for medical equipments and consumables

Result 3.3: Mitigating the Impact of Neglected Diseases
We support mentally ill individuals and their immediate families. Our support is for the individuals to access orthodox medical treatment in government approved hospitals. We can also help with payment of health insurance services. We support mothers of mentally ill children to access economic empowerment services such as small cash grants, small equipment grants, shelter support, personal hygiene education, payment of small personal debts collected to buy medicine (not exceeding monthly minimum wage), payment for treatment of personal injuries and treatment of malaria.

 

Strategic objective 4:
To promote economic empowerment of widows, single mothers and youths
(this objective is tied to objective 2 on providing care and support to orphans and vulnerable children)

Strategic objective 5:
To build capacity of civil society organizations in the areas of project management, monitoring and evaluation

Civil Society Building and Institutional Development
There are three clear spheres of society; private, public and civil society sector. Civil society is a critical component to ensure the attainment of all of our foundation objectives. We also know that strong civil society is needed for the growth and development of the larger society
  
To ensure that citizen participate in influencing policies that affect them at all levels and strata of the society.  We support the building of CSO networks and Coalitions to advocate for issues that will promote better health care, better elections, better education etc…

Strategy:

  • Strengthening civil society as a sector through coalition building and networking
  • Facilitating collaboration between civil society and other sectors  
  • Technical assistance for training CSO on advocacy, monitoring and evaluation   
  • Support to Community mobilization and sensitization activities
  • Support to local CBO to develop advocacy campaign strategies and tactics
  • Collaboration with mass media to educate general public on development issues
  • Improving citizen communication with government officials and private sector

Strategic objective 6:
To conduct pre-evaluation, mid-term evaluation and final evaluation of programs and projects
(this objective is related to capacity objective 5 above on building capacity of CSOs)

Strategic objective 7:
To promote peace, democracy and good governance

Result 7. 1 Support to Electoral Processes
 
Result 7.2 Support to Good Local Governance and Anti-corruption
 
Result 7.3 Support to Citizen Participation

Strategy:

  • Technical assistance and training programs aimed at bringing together government officials and the community at large
  • Building democratic linkages between citizens’ groups and local government bodies to encourage the equitable distribution of authority and enhance local autonomy.
  • Local governance training programs  

Strategy:

  • Building media capacity to provide fair and balanced information in response to public needs while also seeking to establish a legal, regulatory and policy environment that supports an independent media.
  • Skills development; media business development; media law advocacy; and media association development to strengthen the sector’s standing in the host country.
  • Working with media outlets in television, radio and print media and strives to create an informed cadre of professionals
  • Providing training, intensive technical assistance and supports practical application of new methods and skills in the following areas;
  • Training and Production: Training combines extensive formal instruction with practical hands-on production of broadcast and print reports. As demonstrated by industry and journalism school practice, this is the only way to achieve high-quality and sustainable results, while also immediately improving the fact-based quality of media outputs.

 

Strategy  

    • Civic education on the importance of voting and staying informed;
    • Providing skills by which communities can organize themselves to achieve common ends and knowledge that will help them support the electoral system and legislature
    • Providing training, technical assistance, and other resources to enable civil society organizations, professional teacher organizations, government institutions, and others to promote understanding of democratic values and processes
